KITH presents the latest mixtape by New Jersey-bred rapper Cancun, titled - the KITH Tape. We recently sat down with the up-and-coming artist to discuss his background, his aspirations, and his project a little more in-depth.Check out the exclusive interview below, as well as the entire project, available to stream and download now.

Where are you from?
I’m from Paterson, NJ.

How did you get into rap?
Growing up I was always fascinated by the lifestyle of it all. I was always into music, nothing else seemed to interest me. I remember starting to write little raps when I was about 6 years old. I even remember coming home and writing some stuff over that song [“Five Minutes of Funk” by Whodini] from the Ralph McDaniels show.

What motivated you to make a KITH-inspired tape?
The culture. I see the fashion culture KITH affects as similar to the music culture. You know, KITH will drop some fly clothing, and its all you want to wear. Its the same thing with music; when that hot song drops its all you want to hear. Its always about that hot s***, the newness. And I want to embody that with my music. Its like when someone sees the new Asics Ronnie comes out with and everyone is saying, “Oh thats those new Asics?” That excitement for the culture is what I want to do with my music. Also, Ronnie is family. I met him through a mutual friend of ours, Victor Cruz, and as soon as we shook hands it was all love. Great dude, and I have nothing but respect for him and what he has built.

So have you always been into fashion?
Oh yeah for sure. It kind of goes hand in hand. Outside of music, I hope to one day get into the clothing business, and start my own line. I don’t want to be held into any type of box.

Which song is your personal favorite from the project?
Wow. That’s hard for me. I put a lot of effort and a lot of hours into this project. But right now… I’d have to say “Ain’t Shit” with Shy Boogs. I caught myself listening to that song the other night ten times on repeat (laughs). Its immediately catchy. We took that old Snoop beat, remixed it, and flipped it, and the result just came out ill. Its funny because it took me awhile to be able to listen to my own music. I’m my own worst critic. Always tough on myself, but thats how you get better. But now I feel like I’ve reached a point where I can stand behind my work, and listen to my own stuff and really feel like, “Damn this a great song.”

What does the future hold for you?
I want to be a big artist. I want to make an impact. Like I said before, I want do some clothes, maybe KITH-inspired (laughs). No but seriously, I want to affect the culture in one way or another. I don’t want to be defined to one single area. I want to be able to give something for the kids to look forward to.
